School Advisory Council (SAC) Minutes

October 23, 2002

 

1.    Welcome and Introduction:

    Introduction of Dr. Barbara Shirley- new Vice Principal

     Facilitators- Dr. Barbara Shirley and Janet Ndah

     Welcome back to Doris Jones, a retired teacher from Gocio

 

2.    Handouts:

     - Strategic Plan for Excellence 2002-2003 (cover page)

     - Adequate Progress Public Input (last page)

     - Item Analysis for classified, parent, student, and teacher

    

3.    Climate Survey:

     - Last year (2001-2002):  pencil and paper form were sent out and returned to                                    school.

                            600 were sent to families

                             136 were returned

     - Option A- same as last year

     - Option B- phone is survey with a two week window

     - Consensus- paper and pencil to be mailed out.

 

     - Through consensus questions 37, 40, and 41 will remain on this year’s survey.         Questins 38, 39, and 42 will be be deleted.

 

     - Ideas of statements to be added to next year’s survey questionnaire for parents         are as follows: 

      Art, dance, and music instruction are an important part of the elementary school       activities.

      Art, dance, and music have had a positive effect on my child.

      Increasing arts related programs is important to my child’s educational              experience.

      My child spends at least 15 minutes nightly reading.

         

    - Ideas of statements to be added to next year’s survey questionnaire for students        are as follows:

      I spend at least 15 minutes per night reading.

 

 

    - There were no new questions to be added to the teacher survey, however a              separate survey will be sent out at a later date asking: 

       Clubs offered during the school day are enhancing our curriculum.

 

   

4.  The new third grade retention policy for 2003 will be sent home to our K-5              school population via the Gocio Communicator.

 

 5.      Minutes of the September meeting were read, noting one mistake. The

       correction was made and the minutes were approved.
