Glenallen Elementary School
School Advisory Council
Minutes
December 5, 2002
The School Advisory Council meeting was held on December 5, 2002 at 4 p.m. in Portable 1. In attendance were Joan Bower, Principal; Glenn Wile, Assistant Principal; Michelle Channing, co-chairperson; Charleen Ford, secretary; Ali Hinch, Myrette Rodney, Linda Shaughnessy, Robbie Stookey, Yvonne Rezek and Mary Wagner. Absent were Luda Samchuk, Susan Steinfath, Pat Foster and Natasha Telesford. The meeting was called to order by Michelle Channing.
The first order of business was to discuss the
climate survey. Ms. Bower explained how
the survey had been administered to 3rd, 4th, and 5th
graders recently for the purposes of SPS data collection. When the survey is
given in January, only the responses of the 4th and 5th
grades will be in the district report.
The SAC team focused on the wording of many of the
questions in the surveys for the purpose of making these surveys as succinct
and concise as possible. All members
present had input into the phrasing and elimination of redundant items. We were all in agreement to these changes.
Ms. Bower then went on to discuss with the members
what Glenallen’s IAT process involves.
She explained that it is a collegial effort amongst team members to seek
ideas and possible interventions for students with any number of
difficulties. When different approaches
have been tried by the classroom teacher and there still remain concerns with
that student, the option is then available to move along to the CARE team. It was also mentioned that this is not the
only avenue available to help students.
Both Ms. Bower, Mr. Wile as well as our guidance counselor, behavior
specialist, and ESE Liaison, are also involved. Eventually it is anticipated that this IAT process will be
mandated for all our Sarasota schools.
At present, Glenallen and at least four other schools in the district
are following this procedure.
Discussion occurred over the new North Port
elementary school, and what that would do to Glenallen’s enrollment. Ms. Bower stated that the redistricting
would not have much effect on us, because of the proposed redistricting
lines. However at our next SAC meeting
Mr. Ken Marsh will be here to answer questions that we may have about the new
school and its effect on the population of our school.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:12 p.m. Our next meeting will be January 8, 2003
(note the Wednesday meeting day this month) at 4:00 p.m. in portable 1.
Respectfully submitted,
Charleen Ford
Secretary
