SAC Minutes

DATE:  2/21/08                        TIME:  3:30 p.m.                   PLACE:  Conference Room

SAC Members:  Bonnie Adams, Annie Avrutis, Jose Diaz, Susan Harris, Laura Kingsley, Cindy Newell, Maria Ortiz, DeeDee Rice, Herb Waters,.

All members were present.

1)    Welcome – Annie Avrutis

2)    Adopt Minutes --  There were no corrections or additions.

3)    Budget Update – Our student numbers are down in preschool so we will most likely lose one unit, which is one teacher and one aide.  We also have fewer ESE students.  The budget comes out around March 8th this year, so the SAC committee may need to meet an extra time in March.

4)    Lee ConMigo Update – There were approximately 30 families at the first meeting, and about 15 at the second meeting.  Andrew Jaffee presented some science concepts, and there were reading and math stations.  These presentations were in response to concerns from the first meeting.  Individualized instruction was addressed, which cleared up some misconceptions regarding how students are getting specialized instruction.  Families were not interested in an after-school bus service to pick them up for Open Media night.  There was a suggestion to ask the PTO to fund an after-school bus, which ended up costing $8,000 last year.

5)    Economic Forum – A summary of the February 8th meeting was passed out.  Our social worker, County Health Nurse and ESOL team will be available in the Family Resource Room for one hour a week.  There will not be any food or services that will be offered because of liability issues, but lists of community resources will be posted.  There was a discussion about asking Fairway Crossing Apartments if they have a space available to set up a tutoring center.  There will be another meeting on March 27th at 9:30 a.m.

6)    Reading Initiative – We’re keeping track of the number of words the children have read, and we’re up to 93,000,000.  If we get to 150,000,000 by March 27th, everyone will go out and blow out millions of bubbles and we need to figure out a way to pay for millions of words of books to give to Emma Booker in memory of their principal that recently passed away.  They would like to have a helicopter take an administrator with millions of words to them.  There have been some computer problems with the AR program this year.  We were advised to get rid of the 80 older iMac’s and we received 40 replacement computers, but it has not fixed the problem.  Next we restricted access to AR from the iMac’s, which seems to have solved the problem.  Hopefully, we are all set now.

7)    FCAT Update – The Sarasota County Fair is going on during the second week FCAT testing beginning on the make-up day during the first week of testing.

8)    There was a question about continued updates for sex offenders in the area.  Detective Underhill does keep monitoring the website, as does Janet Hetzel.  There are different categories, such as predators and offenders, which have completely different legal definitions.

Next Meeting:  March 20, 2008
