SAC Meeting Minutes
DATE: 8/30/07 TIME: 4:30 p.m. PLACE: Fruitville
Conference Room
1. Members Present: Bonnie Adams, Annie Avrutis, Jose Diaz, Sue
Harris, Laura Kingsley, Cindy Newell, DeeDee Rice, Herb Waters.
- Welcome – Annie Avrutis: Everyone discussed what they hoped to
bring to the table and accomplish this year.
- School Recognition – Laura Kingsley: This is based on 3rd, 4th
and 5th grade performance.
We received an A+ rating, made Adequate Yearly Progress at the
Federal level, and received the Kaleidescope Award for making the biggest
gains in Sarasota County elementary schools.
- Class Size – Laura Kingsley: There will be a District meeting on
Thursday regarding class size numbers.
We will probably be hiring another teacher. Our numbers in kindergarten and second
grade are high, and there is one extra student in each 5th
grade class. The class sizes are 18
in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade, and 22 for 4th
and 5th. It’s been an
overall average so far, but next year it will be per class. Multi-age classes will come into play
because of this. We now have
advanced work classes and a 4/5 split class. There will be K/1, 2/3 and 4/5 classes
next year. We will most likely have
another teacher, and the management team will be meeting next Thursday to
talk about how to handle that additional position. We held one teaching position back for
this year because our numbers were low this summer, up until the Wednesday
before school started. We have been
getting more children enrolled every day.
Another ESE teacher is a possibility so we can have smaller numbers
in the Varying Exceptionalities classes.
Because of the autism program numbers, our class size average from
kindergarten to 3rd grade is 14.
- PR for School – Annie Avrutis, Bonnie
Adams: Frutiville is listed with a
very high number for incidents of crime and violence in the “Sarasota
Magazine’s Homebuyer” real estate magazine. It’s felt that this is probably because
of 911 calls from the school for health reasons.
6. Bylaws – Laura Kingsley: The committee reviewed the Operational
Guidelines.
- SIP Review – Laura Kingsley: Copies of the School Improvement Plan
for 2007-2008 were distributed for review and discussion. Dr. Kingsley will bring the EQuIP Data
Source to the next meeting. The 150
minutes a week of PE has cut into the school day. Copies will be distributed to SAC
members of Fruitville’s specific strategies, and all members are asked to
review those for the next meeting on September 20th. SAC members can make recommendations
also and submit them to SDMT. They
will have made their recommendations by the 20th, and it is due to the
district by the 28th.
- The equity handbook was reviewed.
- Confirm Dates/Times – Annie Avrutis: Everyone agreed to the 3:30 meeting
timeframe.
