Thanks and Welcome:   Thanks to Rita Hauer and Vicki Brewer for the excellent refreshments, and welcome to Dan Kiehl, our new E.E.S. Business Partner representative.

SPE Plan (2002-03) – Ginny handed out copies of the 2002-03 Strategic Plan for Excellence (SPE) to all SAC members.  Team representatives also received a copy for each team member.  The final draft of the plan was sent to the county office in early October.  Additional changes included:

1.      Reading page 3 – goal measure of 20% for FCAT Level 4 Reading

2.      Reading page 4 – addition of running records as a strategy for monitoring reading progress

3.      Math page 5 – goal measure of 20% for FCAT Level 4 Math

4.      Writing page 8 – 5th grade writing simulation score goal 5.0 or higher

Camille Ashcraft from the county office sent a note complimenting the structure and content of the plan.

EMCOT projects (2002-03) – A handout summary of this year’s EMCOT projects was distributed.  Most projects are already in operation for the school year.  Exceptions include those projects that are linked with E-TV, and those will be ready to begin when E-TV is up and running on a regular basis.  Mrs. Jones’ class project, the Kids’ Kitchen, may be altered to include a science focus this year.  Ginny will put together an EMCOT Annual Report for 2002-03.  The report will be completed in early 2003 and will reflect any project changes as well as current participation.

Recognition Funds -  The SAC voted to approve the E.E.S. staff recommendation for use of state recognition funds.  88% of the funds will go to bonuses for instructional staff (teachers, support, aides, and secretaries) and 12% to custodial and food service staff.  These percentages reflect the current make up of the staff (88% instructional and 12% custodial and food service.)  Diane Gomoll expressed concern that no funds were saved directly for student recognition.  Donna Catanzarite detailed a plan for each student to receive a book from the Book Fair.  Each book will contain a book plate which recognizes that the student is part of an “A” school effort.  Ginny also explained plans for a school-wide “A-DAY” celebration to be held during special area classes.  The day will include special opportunities and activities for the students, lots of “A-DAY” decorations, banners and certificates, and hopefully lots of home-cooked goodies from the E.E.S. staff for the students to enjoy.  Suggestions for the future included combining SAC and the staff meeting as part of this decision making process.

District Climate Survey Plans  - This year’s district climate survey includes several options for each school to choose from.  The district surveys all parents, all 4th and 5th grade students, and all staff members.  Options include:

1.      a paper/pencil survey which is mailed out and then mailed back to the district and is tallied by the district

2.      a similar survey with phone in response only, tallied by the district

3.      a school-designed survey which includes all district required elements, tallied by the school

4.      a commercially designed survey purchased by the individual school which includes all district required elements as is tallied by the school

5.      for all the options, each school may add 6 – 8 survey items which are unique to that school.

After discussion, the SAC decided to continue to use the paper/pencil survey which is mailed out and tallied by the district.  Donna Catanzarite suggested that we include questions that address our extended school hours (1 hour before school and 1 hour after school M – F and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings) and our expanded family programming through Family Reading Nights and Reading Celebrations.  Donna and Ginny will put together these questions in a format similar to the rest of the climate survey and turn them in to the county by the November 15th deadline.

Student Performance Data – Discussion groups which will investigate E.E.S. student performance in the areas of Reading, Math, and Writing were tabled until our November meeting.  At that meeting, small groups which will include a primary teacher, and intermediate teacher, an “other”, 2 – 3 parents, and 1 – 2 citizens will examine the county EQuIP data on our students’ performance in these areas --- a beginning needs assessment in advance of our 2003-04 SPE plan, a new 5-year plan with a new format and structure.

October SAC - SMT Meeting:   The next regularly scheduled SAC-SMT meeting for Englewood Elementary School is on Wednesday, November 20th at 3:00 p.m. in the Media.   Diane Gomoll and Gina Bannan will provide refreshments at the meeting (thanks!!).
