CRANBERRY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

SAC MEETING MINUTES

February 26, 2008

Ms. Daniels opened the meeting by reviewing the School Improvement presentation for the School Board Meeting on March 18, 2008.  She shared the kind of information and possible questions to be prepared to answer during the dialogue.   The representatives from Cranberry will be Ms. Daniels, Principal, ; Mr. Carey, Assistant Principal; Dr. Cherie Rzad, Data Coach, ; and SAC Chair, Don Cramer.

Ms. Daniels shared some new information regarding our school uniform for the 2008-09 school year.  We are planning to add the colors of pink and light blue for our polo shirts and eliminating the royal blue.   Mr. Palutz had a couple of questions regarding uniforms.  He wanted to know why shirts had to be tucked in, and why we didn’t have a special day for students to wear their “sport” shirts from little league teams etc.  Ms. Daniels said that tucking in the shirts makes a neater appearance and this gives the students a better attitude towards learning.   The “sport” shirt day is just too broad and creates an atmosphere that is not conducive to learning.

Ms. Daniels introduced a guest speaker, Amy Donner , a grant writer from Sarasota County Schools.  She presented a PowerPoint on “Safe Routes to School.”  The following points were presented:

1.        Improving Health, Safety, and Transportation

2.       The need of Safe Routes to school

3.       Benefits of the Safe Routes to School program

4.       Elements of the Program:  Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, Engineering, Evaluation.

5.       Funding

6.       Infrastructure Proposal for Cranberry

7.       Non-infrastructure Proposal for Cranberry

Ms. Donner then asked for volunteers to form a committee to study and come up with how best to utilize the funding given by this grant.  Kimberly Powell, Georgette Carroll, and James Plautz volunteered to be on the committee.   Ms. Donner said she would schedule a time to meet together with them to discuss the grant and use of funding.  The plan needs to be formulated by March 31, 2008.

Mrs. Amaya stated that she would like to see Cranberry do some form of education for water conservation. While volunteering, she observes students leaving water faucets running after washing their hands which wastes a lot of water.  Ms. Daniels stated she would encourage our Environmental Club to begin some form of education for all students regarding the use and conservation of water.  It was mentioned that there is a Splash Mini grant available from the SWFlorida Management Department to assist with education etc.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
