SAC MEETING MINUTES

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Media Center 8:00 a.m.

The minutes from the previous meeting were handed out to members present.

Ms. Daniels was attending a Climate Survey Meeting at the Landings, and in her absence John Carey began the review of the School Improvement Plan.

Mr. Carey asked everyone to look at page 12 of the SIP and began to review the strategies that have been implemented since the beginning of school.

1        Teachers are meeting twice a week with PLC monitoring                                           student progress and how to meet the needs of those student needing extra help.

2        Compass Learning has been implemented with each class having a scheduled time in the computer lab and reports from FCAT Explorer indicate it is being utilized by a large number of students.

3        The CAST Program is now complete and took place after school, Monday through Thursday from Sept – December, as well as 6 Saturdays.  This focus was on Reading for our Third Grade students.

4        All classes have 90 minute reading blocks during the day with no interruptions.

5        We have had one FCAT Writing Night for fourth grade students and one of their parents.  We have scheduled a third grade reading night  for students and one of their parents for Jan 20th.

6        The CAT (Cross Age Tutorial) Program will be implemented in February beginning on Feb 5th for Fourth Grade Writing and the following three Saturdays Feb 12, 19, and 26th for students grades 3-5 for Math.

7        We have hired a part time A-3 Instructional Aide to work with Level 1 students in Math in Grades 2 – 5.

There was discussion about reviewing this information without specific numbers indicating progress or how these programs/strategies are working.  Mr. Carey indicated he did not have specific numbers available, but would try to have it available for the next SAC meeting.

It was brought up that possibly the CAT Program could be implemented in some form to be an on-going tutorial program throughout the year for those students needing special help in either math or reading.

Mr. Carey mentioned that using funds from our Gulfcoast Community Grant we have Mary Lewis reading and writing workshops being conducted  throughout the year with teachers.  So far the consultant has held writing workshops for our third and fourth grade teachers.  We are conducting school-wide writing prompts during the week of January 10.

It was suggested that we have grade level presentations regarding current assessment of progress by students in reaching our SIP goals and what strategies are working.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:50 a.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Margaret Roberson, Secretary
