SIP

Joe Bazenas explained the SIP process and reviewed the needs assessment data along with the goals for the school year.  He indicated we have a diverse school that provides students with a variety of research based learning environments.  Brookside offers a rich exploratory program and special programs for students struggling in math and reading as well as programs to meet the needs of students who excel academically.  He reminded the SAC that it was tasked with reviewing, revising and approving the plan in conjunction with the school’s lead teachers and administration.

The SIP outlines the professional development activities designed to help teachers meet the needs of the students and meet the target goals of the SIP.  Teachers will be given the opportunity to develop Standards Driven Lesson Plans based on training from the Landings.  These lessons are based on the Sunshine State Standards which are assessed by the FCAT.  Teachers will focus on increasing Literacy across the content areas and are using an enrichment/tutorial model in a class on the master schedule.  The SIP indicated that challenged subgroups included students with special needs and from economic disadvantaged, and among the African American and Hispanic ethnic groups.  The SIP presents specific strategies to address these areas and provides targets for increasing the percentage students in each subgroup meeting FCAT expectations.

Dawn Carey moved that we accept the SIP.  Phil Puzzanchera seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor.

We have a budget (State Lottery) of $15,757 and committed to $3,000 to technology and $6,000 to math and language arts tutoring.

A request was made to amend the amount for SIP funds to increase math tutoring allocation to appropriate amount.  Only one tutor instead of initial two teachers.   Dawn Carey motioned that we amend the amount.  Phil Puzzanchera seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor.

The use of the remainder of the budget was discussed.  A historical perspective regarding technology allocation at Brookside was presented.  As a school we have moved from centralizing technology on one strand to sharing these resources and best practices across campus.  Administration has worked to provide mobile laptop labs for each academic team.  The school currently has eleven labs for the twelve teams.  The approximate cost of a mobile lab is $27,000.  The school PTSO has committed to fundraising toward this goal.  Stephanie Hall motioned to have the remainder of the SAC budget be directed toward supporting the purchase of the final lab.  Dawn Carey seconded the motion and all members voted in favor.

The Equity Books were distributed to each SAC member.  Joe Bazenas explained that there are rights and a process to use for any issue.

Mission I’m Possible – Dr. Nelson was referred to as our Director of Middle School.  The middle school students are here and it is possible to go forward.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:00 p.m.
