SAC MINUTES

SEPTEMBER 9, 2004 AT 2:15 P.M.

 

 

Members Present:

Joe Bazenas, Dawn Carey, Karen Chester, Traci Douberly, Debra Markley, Debra Reese, Karen Rose.

 

Guest Present:

Chris Gruters

 

Karen Chester called the meeting to order.  Ms. Chester noted that SAC currently has five Sarasota County School Board members and four non-School Board members, which leaves SAC with two vacancies for non-Board members.

 

Ms. Chester reviewed the budget for the 2004-2005 school year.  The balance is $12,325.50. 

 

The 2004-2005 SAC Guidelines were reviewed.  Dawn Carey motioned to approve the Guidelines.   Debra Reese seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor. 

 

SAC meetings will be held at 2:15 p.m. on the following dates: October 14; November 18; December 9; January 13; February 10; March 10; April 14; May 12. *November’s meeting will be held one week later due to the observance of Veteran’s Day.

 

Karen Rose discussed the SIP funding and how Brookside is charged with channeling toward our vision of improved reading, writing and mathematics for all students and the importance of focusing to achieve our goals.

 

Reading and Math After-School Tutoring Proposal

Karen Rose proposed that we continue our after school Reading and Math tutoring program.  Teachers Allison Luthman and Debora Shannon will provide after school tutoring two days per week, 1 hour per day, per session.  The total request for Ms. Luthman is $1,130.49 and for Ms. Shannon $1,637.61. The total for each teacher will cover the cost for their time for the year.  Debra Markley motioned to approve the request and Debra Reese seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor.

 

Bus for Inset Population (Newtown)

It is the goal of Brookside to provide students in the Inset Population (Newtown) an opportunity to participate in after school tutoring and extracurricular activities.  Mr. Durrance is currently researching the transportation options and the cost.  He will provide this information at the next SAC meeting.

 

Karen Rose withdrew Odyssey of the Mind until the next SAC meeting.

 

A+ Dollars

Karen Chester went over the budget process with the committee.  Brookside was awarded $127,186 in A+ dollars this year.  Ms. Chester shared the Team Leaders/SDMT proposal for A+ fund distribution.  After staff shares have been issued, the balance of A+ dollars would be divided among teams.  Joe Bazenas motioned to approve the A+ dollar allocations.  Deb Markley seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor.

 

Other Business

Debra Reese discussed PALS Leadership Training, which will be held September 23, 2004 at Laurel Nokomis School from 5:30-8:30 p.m.  The Five Star Dinner will be at SCTI on October 21, 2005 with the time TBA.

 

Lead Teachers agreed to increase the French teaching position from a .6 to full-time.  The position will be posted.   HIP (Homework Intervention Program) will require Brookside to hire an A-3.  The position will be posted.  Karen Rose motioned to approve the positions.  Debra Reese seconded the motion and all members voted unanimously in favor.

 

Alex Cornell

SAC members mourn the loss of past member, Alex Cornell, who died last month after a courageous battle with cancer.  He will be greatly missed by all.
