The minutes from the January 8, 2004 meeting were reviewed. Joe Bazenas motioned to accept the minutes and Steve Bloom seconded the motion. Consensus was reached.
Karen Chester reviewed the budget with a current balance of $4,171.99.
SIP Proposals:
Agatha Taylor requested funds to attend the AAHPERD National Convention in New Orleans. The week convention focuses on cutting edge health, physical education, recreation, and dance issues that can be applied in the classroom. Ms. Taylor will also use the information learned to potentially implement a Health Fair at Brookside in the fall. The total cost to attend is $1,545. SAC will assist with $1,045 and Brookside will contribute $500. Deb Markley motioned to accept the proposal and Dawn Carey seconded the motion. Consensus was reached.
Michelle Drake requested $1,000 for the Science Department. Ms. Drake would like to purchase a Flex Cam for $495 for their microscopes, which enable the teachers to project onto a screen images of cells, dissections, etc. Ms. Drake also requested $505 to purchase consumable science equipment and supplies to include plants, seeds, and chemicals for their “science kitchen.” After further questioning, Karen Rose suggested paying for the request from school funds. No funds are required from SAC.
Deb Markley requested $1,500 for the upcoming Arts Day on March 26th. The cost of tents would be $1,400 and $100 for arts supplies. Debra Reese motioned to accept the proposal and Tracy Witzer seconded the motion. Consensus was reached.
Karen
Rose withdrew the last two funds requests on the agenda (Continuing Education
Seminar and Strand Planning).
Joe
Bazenas provided a memo prepared by the Landings related to the criteria for
"Making Annual Learning Gains" for school accountability. Learning
gains are based on student performance as assessed by FCAT. There was a brief
discussion of our current status as total population and with the various
sub-categories ascribed by the NCLB protocols.
Brookside is considering piloting a 6th Grade Team, called AIM Academy, which would start in the fall. This team would be an accelerated model in math and reading. Certain criteria must be met to be on the team. The AIM Academy would be a heterogeneous community, which would include an accelerated model. Mrs. Rose and the focus group will continue researching and compiling additional data.
Debra Reese, PALS Vice-President, asked everyone to consider serving on the PALS Advisory Board. The board meets once monthly on Thursday mornings. The board may consider changing the time and day of their meetings to accommodate new members, if needed.
There were no further questions or concerns.
The meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
