BRENTWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

PTO / SAC BOARD MEETING

APRIL 7, 2005

Meeting called to order at 3:05 pm

Welcome: Sign-in sheet was passed around.

Mr. McQueen’s Report:

v     Television station is on the air broadcasting 1 time per week with the hopes of broadcasting 2-3 times per week by the end of the year.  Next year the plan will be to broadcast every day. Thank you to the PTO for your generosity!

v     Testing is over! Thanks to the staff that made sure that it was successful.

v     We have some new hires / roles:  Monica Serino who is a bookkeeper at Gocio will be our new bookkeeper here at Brentwood due to Mrs. Termine going to the new school.  Ms. Serino’s start date is April 18. Emily Gilmore from Alta Vista will be our new Registrar due to Mrs. Beckwith going to the new school. Our interim principal, Mr. Hockett, will have his first official day on April 18. Teresa Giummo will be his secretary through the end of the year.  Vicki Day’s mom, Barbara Wright, will be filling in through the end of the year as the front desk receptionist.

v     Thank you to Chris Moler, Melissa Jeffrey and Renee Thompson for helping during staff pictures.

v     Journey Back in Time / Prairie Days was here as a reward for our students for being an A school. We have already scheduled them for next year with the hopes that we will be an A school once again.

v     The PE and Student Council worked together to do Jump Rope for your Heart in order to raise money for the Heart Association.

v     Brentwood did Pennies for Pasta again this year and raised $2100 for the Lymphoma Society.   This is the most money we raised ever!

v     On April 14th we will have Kindergarten Round-Up.  This year we will have a school bus driving our incoming kindergartners around the neighborhood.

v     Staff Appreciation Week is coming up. Mr. McQueen is hoping that the PTO will match funds once again to make this a special week. PTO agreed to support.

Secretary’s Report:

March 2005 minutes were read, accepted and seconded.

Treasurer’s Report:

The current bank account information was read, accepted & seconded.

Adopt-A-Class:

We are now ready for any second adoptions.

Old Business:

Jog-A-Thon – There is more money coming in every day!

Spring Fling - There is a meeting after the PTO meeting to discuss details.  We are still gathering donations for the Silent Auction.  A letter was handed out to secure donations.  We are still selling meals for Walt’s Fish Market – a minimum of 100 meals needs to be sold.  We discussed use of a credit card machine. The minimum rental is $51.00 / month for a minimum of 3 months and we could use it for other events.  It was decided that this would not be cost-effective.

Book Fair – We need more volunteers. It will be April 28 & 29th during the school day and then in the evening during Spring Fling.  The theme is “Catch a Tail”. Photos will be taken of teachers and their pets.  We will be sending a letter home to the parents advertising the book fair including the summer book list.  Reading Counts books will be labeled this year.  We will also include in the letter that parents can specify how to spend the money (i.e. on a RC book, or “no posters”).  Only the children who bring in money will get to go to the Book Fair. Not only do we receive money from the sale of the books but our library also benefits with new books.

New Business:

On May 12 there is a Parents Writing Night. Mrs. Powell proposed for PTO to sponsor

“Bare Books” for 166.86 for 103 books. PTO agreed.

We discussed important dates for next year and established leaders.

v     Folder Stuffing will be in early August.

v     Meet the Teacher will be August 4th from 6:30 – 8:00. Corry Tyle and Adina Rivera agreed to head it.

v     The Teachers Luncheon will be held on August 5th. Michelle Walsh and Jayne Gaetano agreed to co-chair it.

v     The Morning Coffee will be the first day of school, August 8th. Adina Rivera and Chris Moler agreed to be in charge of this.

v     The Fall Fundraiser will be the 1st or 2nd week of school. Staci Blackwell and Julie will be in charge of this.

We are still seeking leaders for the Book Fair, Holiday Gift Shop, Jog-A-Thon, and Spring Fling.  We are also looking for an Adopt-A-Class Treasurer.

We discussed getting more people involved in the PTO. Invite parents of people that you know to come to the last meeting. There are lots of ways to get involved and the more people we get will be better.  A letter will be going out about PTO and how to get involved. We will be using the PTO page on the website and the “on hold” message as well.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 4:00 pm.
