PTO/SAC BOARD MEETING

SEPTEMBER 2, 2004

Meeting called to order at 3:04 p.m.

Welcome:

  • The meeting will be brief today since school is cancelled tomorrow due to Hurricane Frances.
  • Sign-in sheet was passed around.
  • Snow-cone party sign-up sheet was passed around (to thank the students for wearing their Brentwood t-shirts every Friday.
  • Snack sign-up sheet for the PTO meetings was passed around (for the adults & the kids).

Principal’s Report:

  • Brentwood has maintained its “A” rating once again.
  • Brentwood also met the Federal standard for improvement for last year. The standard is a rigorous plan that measures the improvement for different sub-groups within a school.
  • The first budget meeting is at the end of September. The PTO has two members that sit on the SAC Board and help determine how the “A” money from the state is allocated. This year our money totals $96,000.
  • Mrs. Russell gave a Hurricane Frances update.
  • Sue Taskey asked for $10,000 this year and $10,000 next year to purchase a site license for new software/hardware for the computer lab. She will be receiving matching funds for a total of $40,000 in the next two years. This will enhance our CCC lab which is independent study for students at their own academic level for math and reading. There are also modules for adult learning as well. Eventually, the students will have access to CCC from their Internet at home! The motion was made, seconded and passed.

Mr. McQueen’s Report:

  • Mr. McQueen asked for $3,500 to purchase equipment for a broadcasting lab. This will allow our students to write, produce and air a daily news program. We are one of the only elementary schools in the county that doesn’t have this type of program already in place. He will be obtaining matching funds of $3,500 from other fund-raising sources such as the toner recycling program and our new after-school care program. The motion was made, seconded and passed.
  • Our new after-school care program has started with a bang! We currently have 120 students utilizing this program and very few on a waiting list. The response has been wonderful and this will be a money-making venture for Brentwood.

Secretary’s Report: May’s PTO minutes were read, accepted and seconded.

Treasurer’s Report:

  • The report was read, accepted and seconded without changes.
  • Kris Moler read the 2004-2005 budget changes.

PALS Update:

  • You must sign up for PALS every year. Please remember to sign up now so that as field trips and volunteer opportunities come up, you are able to help.
  • Please enter ALL your PTO hours; this includes, work done at home, phone calls made at home, etc.
  • All Officers and Chairpersons of events need to have a permanent volunteer badge. Please see Linda Turmine in the office and she will print one for you.
  • Mrs. Richardson is in charge of the PALS reading volunteers for Brentwood. She is asking for anyone that can volunteer just one hour per week to work with a student on reading skills please sign up for the training class. It is necessary to attend the training class in order to help throughout the year.

Adopt-A-Class Update: Tami Kurtz reported that nearly ½ of the adoptions are already complete.

Fall Fundraisers:

  • The Sally Foster fundraiser due date will be extended due to Hurricane Frances. Notices will go home early next week announcing the new deadline. Internet orders are being counted in the student’s total sales without any problems.
  • The Book Fair will be held from 10/28 through 11/4/04. The final evening is the Open House event and we will be using the Media Center this year for the Scholastic Book Fair. This should make for a more enjoyable time since the Cafeteria is not a comfortable space. As always, lots of volunteers are needed. The co-chairpersons for this event are Renée Thompson and Adina Rivera.

Misc. New Business:

  • A big thank you to Cory Tyle for organizing the Welcome Back Teacher’s Luncheon.
  • Please read the PTO Bylaws that were handed out. These were last amended four years ago and some changes might need to be made. Please come prepared to next month’s meeting with any suggestions you might have to improve/update the bylaws.
  • We were encouraging our Brentwood families to join the PTO early in the school year by offering a chance to win a DVD player if they joined by September 1, 2004. The Harrera family was the winner of the DVD player.
  • All additional discussion was tabled until next month due to Hurricane Frances.

Meeting adjourned at 3:45 p.m.
