Chair Report -           Ms. Claudia King

SAC minutes –October 18, 2007.  Minutes reviewed and approved for posting on SAC website.

Ms. White-Davis – Principal Reports:

·         Review of the SAC Committee purpose to make decisions

                                    regarding the BHS budget, curriculum, and programs.

·         Booker High School’s priority in the elimination of the “D: is through accountability and assessment of the FCAT with reading being the key element.

·         Read 180 Reading Program . . . . . . . . .  Ms. Vivian Heggs

Booker High School currently has three (3) classrooms using

the Read 180 program.  Read 180 is comprised of five (5)

components:  Inventory testing (to determine student need)

                         Teacher instruction

                          Reading

                          Software interaction

                          Audio tape interaction

Small groups of students rotate between the 5 areas each day working on level and challenged as they progress.

Five additional intensive reading classrooms do not have

a Read 180 program, however, these classes utilize listening centers and classroom structure is functioning using the

Read 180 model.

Miss Heggs monitors all reading classrooms to assure the teaching is focused and uniform.

Ms. White-Davis is appealing to the community to raise needed funds to purchase additional Read 180 programs.

  • Booker High Student Achievement Data . . . . . . . Mr. Jeff Kahler

Booker High Strengths & Weaknesses:

            FCAT testing data results indicate that Booker High students

            may do well with classroom structure and home assignments

            however, do not test well on the FCAT.

            Students must become more serious about FCAT testing, and

 progress is being made – we have higher numbers of students re-testing

to obtain higher scores and passage – 31% (118 students) this year over

a previous year of only 30 students.

FCAT is the achievement tool used by the education system.  Factors

Influencing the test:

Reading passages are long – students must

concentrate, process, and evaluate content and context;

Vocabulary

Fluency

Endurance

Motivation

Recognition and care.

Booker High School needs to:

Invest in a vocabulary program;

Teach students test taking strategies;

 Look at how we test; perhaps change of environment; reduce student

            testing anxiety.

Students who do not pass FCAT still graduate from high school, but only

with a Certificate of Completion that is not recognized by colleges.

Policy Against Student Discrimination: Ms. White-Davis

School Board policy is published and distributed to every student

and School Board employee.  State equity laws apply to all with

 harassment  as the main discrimination.  All must conform to the laws.

  • SDMT  Report – Miss Roby

A proposal to use lottery Funds for the publication of the Booker

 High Newspaper  - 6 publications - $1053.12 needed.  SAC committee

 members approved expenditure, pending absentee member vote.

Attendance letters set home reminding students and parents of the

District Absentee Policy and Graduation Guidelines.  Ms. White-Davis

 checking  District policy and will advise SDMT.

Copy machine request for Building 5.  A 3 year rental would cost

$17,718.   Perhaps a purchase would be more cost effective. This
