Minutes of Meeting September 21, 2006

 

Present:           McKenzie Altman, Alexandra Barber, Kim Davis, David Denkin, Jill Dorsett,

                        David Grain, Lillian Mignano, Beverly Porter, Claudia Postell, Carta Robison,

                        Wendy Sterns, Linda Ware, Jared Warn, Leslie Wessel.

 

 

I.          Welcome & Minutes:  Meeting began at 6:00 PM

SAC members welcomed followed by introduction of

Committee members.

 

II.        Chair Report               David Denkin, acting SAC Chairperson:

·         SAC Officers for 2006-2007 were nominated and elected as follows:

            Chairperson:  Claudia Postell

            Vice-Chair:      Jared Warn

            Recording Secretary:  Linda Ware, as per nomination and

                        approval of a SAC By-law change, to allow a SAC

Committee member to serve a fourth consecutive term.

                                                Elected officers to assume positions October 19, 2006.

 

·         Discussion of 2005-2006 By-Laws which states SAC Committee members are elected.

 

A change of the By-Laws was suggested to accommodate the 2006-2007 selection of SAC Committee members by the Principal, Ms. Dorsett.  Committee members were selected based on Booker High School student demographics. 

 

SAC Committee members are to be listed on Booker High School website to inform public of the Committee Members selected. Any person showing interest in being a part of the SAC Committee is encouraged to attend the meetings.

 

David Denkin will draft a formal By-Law change to reflect the selection process of Booker High SAC committee members. Presentation of By-Law change to be discussed at the October SAC meeting.

 

III.       Principal Report          Ms. Dorsett, Principal:

 

·         Discussion of the SACS Council on Accreditation and School Improvement.  The outcome of the Quality Assurance Review Team commended  Booker High School for continued progress in meeting their criteria with their School Improvement Plan and suggested the following: 

1.      Continue with our Small Learning Community Program.

2.      Focus on the School Literacy Plan

3.      Continue professional staff development

4.      Increase staff input with decision making policies.

 

·         Presentation on the Modifications for the Florida School Grading System for 2006-2007 illustrating scores needed to qualify as an “A, B, C, D, F” school.  Score is based on FCAT testing results -- percentage of student achievement in Science and the percentage of the lowest 25% in Math learning gains.  Booker High School FCAT test results from 2002 – 2006 indicate more intense teaching in the reading skills necessary to produce better student FCAT scores.  Reading skills affect math and science testing scores. District, State and Federal Initiatives mandates incorporated into Booker High School 2006-2007 School Improvement Plan goals.

 

·         Budget and Title 2 funds for teachers to attend educational development conferences are available this year.

 

·         SAC needs to develop a plan and procedure to monitor Booker High self evaluation committees.  Ms. Dorsett requested committee members to e-mail ideas to accomplish this task.

 

·         Discussion of High School Reform, “Is It Good For the Kids”. This article to be mailed to SAC members and discussion to continue at October SAC meeting.

 

·         Dr. Norris announced his resignation as Superintendent of Sarasota County School Board, effective June, 2007.

 

·         SAC will meet throughout the up-coming year the third Thursday of every month.  Next scheduled meeting:  October 19, 2006. 

Meeting dates may require rescheduling throughout the school

year.  SAC Committee members will be informed of any and

all  SAC meetings by the SAC Secretary.

 

 

IV.       Student Report           Student SAC Committee Members consist of Freshman Class

President Alexander Barber, Sophomore Class President

McKenzie Altman, Junior Class President Jared Warn, and

Senior Class President Carta Robison.  Students will provide

the SAC Committee with updates on student activities, both on

campus and volunteer activities within our community.  Student

input plays a vital role providing insight and direction for Booker

High School’s School Improvement Plan .
