SAC Minutes        September 18, 2002

 

 

Present:  Tricia Allen, Jan Gibbs, Corey Giordano, Rebecca Hass, Mary Virginia Knowles,

 Dorothy Kosovac, Mignon Lyons, Dr. Jack McDonald, Merilee Muir, Christopher Puchalla,

Isabel Reyes, Linda Ware.

 

Agenda:                 Introduction of  SAC members

                                Brief description of the purpose of SAC and the responsibilities of a SAC member.

                                SAC Committee Objective:  Draft SIP for 2003 - 2004 to meet Goals 2000.

                                                                                   Determine the student / staff/ classroom needs projection

                                                                                                for the next 5 years.

Discussion:                Data from School Year 2001 - 2002:  SAC members evaluated math,

reading , writing,  and AP testing data 2001 - 2002. Booker High School student

proficiency increased in math; level in reading for past 10 years (national indicators);

writing performance level is very high.

 

Attendance data and the effect attendance has on student grades / testing results.

Positive influence Booker High staff, Small Learning Community, and volunteer

tutoring programs has resulted in a decrease in absenteeism, student

discipline problems and student dropout.

 

A Student Court Program has been initiated by Booker High School Law

Academy to address students with attendance and excessive tardy issues.

The program appears to be working well.

 

Strategic Plan for Excellence:  Current report reflects areas to be addressed by SAC,

                                                Booker High administration, and Booker High staff during the 2002-2003

school year.

 

Solutions to meet Booker High School Plan for Excellence:

                 CRISS training is in effect for administrators and instructional staff .

                All Booker High instructional staff  is to incorporate reading skills

                                into their curriculum; office support staff to be made aware of

                                how they, too, can assist students to improve read skills.

                                Programs initiated to be monitored to maintain focus and

effectiveness.

                                                                Accelerated Reader program with student reward incentive is being

considered.

                                                                 Parent newsletter to be more informative and to be published

                                in Spanish.

                Development of a Leadership Team consisting of instructional staff,

                                 support staff, administrator and students.

                Booker High Media Specialist is listing new reading material on BBS

                                to inform and encourage staff and students to read and

                                use the media center and public library facilities.

 

By-Law changes for 2002 - 2003 were adopted - draft for finalization

to be discussed and submitted to County prior to October

deadline.

 

                                                Chris Puchalla will continue to be acting SAC Chairperson.
