S.A.C. Minutes

October 17, 2006

3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

Media Center

 

 

1)   ENROLLMENT / STAFFING UPDATE                           W. Muth

·        Due to Ashton enrollment and the new class size                    S. Whitesides

amendment additional KG class has been added     

·        Thanks to wonderful KG team transition was very smooth

·        FTE (Full Time Equivalency) sent into state – will not be required to

add additional teacher during the remaining 2006 – 2007 school year

 

 

2)   SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN                                         W. Muth

·        Some percentages were increased by a few points                S. Whitesides

·        Taylor Ranch Staff will be conducting Differentiated Instruction training

for Ashton teachers,

·        Kagan Training will also be provided for the teachers – Toni Gray, lead instructor

·        There will be a writing workshop on Saturday, October 28th – Chris Lewis

·        A Professional Reading Group has been established

 

 

3)   SCHOOL-WIDE CIVIC PROJECT                                         W. Muth

·        S.A.C. conducts school-wide civic project                                              S. Whiteside

·        Suggestions:

o       Camp Fishtales

o       Guide Dog Adoptions

o       Would final suggestions next month, November

o        Hearing impaired community – deaf service center –

dogs for hearing impaired?

o       Book collection for mothers at Cyesis

o       Pets/humane society – children would enjoy getting involved in project involving animals

o       The more children are interested the more involved the parents will be in project

·        5th Grade will be selling T-Shirts to help save the rain forest in Africa – Student Generated Project

·        REACH classes collecting for Food Bank  

           

           

           

4)   STUDENT WALKERS                                                                A. Quale (E-mail)

·        Concern regarding sidewalk in back pick-up area concern

·        A sidewalk exists on east side

·        May want to install sidewalk on west side

·        There is a lot of student walker traffic along Elizabeth

and Victoria

·        There is not a sidewalk leading from school to Elizabeth

·        Students should be using sidewalk provided leading to and on campus

·        Additional concern with parents dropping off children coming down wrong street and turning around

 

 

5)   CRISIS RESPONSE PLAN                                                       A. Quale (E-mail)

·        There are 3 Crisis Response Plans in place in Sarasota County

o       Code Red, total lock down-students and teachers stay locked in classroom out of sight

o       Code Yellow, students leave the premises/campus – wait until all clear or evacuate completely

o       Code White, lock down, but teachers continue to teach

·        There are drills conducted throughout the year practicing the plans

·        Also have Severe weather, Fire and Bomb Threat drills

o       Drills are announced over PA unless bomb threat then land line used

·        Teachers/Volunteers excellent source of campus security, alert to unusual situations

·        An Example of Canada school shooting offered as concern – what is process of defining rules, how is staff alerted, is staff aware of responsibilities

o       A suggestion was made that the sheriff visit Ashton,  walk campus and become  familiar with campus

o       Send notices home to parent alerting parents to sign in at office for badge before entering campus, safety standards will be more stringent on campus

o       Other schools require parents to return badges to office before leaving campus

o       Come up with catch phrase to remind parents to be on the look out and report if they see something unusual – newsletter - information sheets – signs –

·        Afternoon dismissal concerns regarding students waiting for parents

o       Re-enforce Safety Patrol’s responsibilities regarding students safety, procedure to alert of safety concerns – Coach Adams

·        During September meeting, the school Superintendent discussed security concerns, possible fencing and other options for school security

     

 

 

6)   SAC MEMBERSHIP                                                                 W. Muth

·       Need 3 new members for SAC parent numbers                        S. Whitesides

·        Explain S.A.C. to potential members

·        PTO board will vote on new members

 

       

 

7)   OTHER                                                                                    All

·        Safety Issue: bushes at the end of Victoria onto Proctor

are  very overgrown; difficult when looking left for clearance
