FCAT
- Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test
The
writing portion of the FCAT is administered to all eighth grade students.
Students will be required to read, plan and respond independently
to a topic within a 45 minute time frame.
The
reading and math portion of the FCAT will be administered to all sixth,
seventh, and eighth grade students unless otherwise stated on their
IEP.
While
the FCAT uses multiple choice questions, it also contains questions
that require students to think, write, and solve problems. called
performance items, the questions might require the student to write
and explanation, justify an answer, or show how he or she solved a
math problem.
The
reading comprehension subtest assesses and reports students' comprehension
within the framework of three types of material:
-
Recreational literature
- read for enjoyment or merit
-
Textual - content
from natural, physical, and social sciences, as well as other
nonfiction general information materials
-
Functional - material
encountered in everyday life, including directions, forms, schedules,
personal notes, and advertisements
The
math problem solving includes drawing a picture, making a list, extending
a pattern, using logical reasoning, and more. the items require higher
order thinking and / or non-computational strategies to produce a
solution. Many of the items even involve an element of performance
assessment in which students must perform a mathematical task before
they are able to make a reasonable selection from the options presented.
