Volunteers of the Year  Announced

Youth Volunteer – Derrick Powers

Derrick Powers is a Booker High School student who attended McIntosh a few years ago. Derrick has returned this year to provide assistance to several of our teachers. He has helped in many ways. He has graded papers, made bulletin boards, ran errands, and even unpacked boxes and organized cabinets. Most importantly, he urges the students do well and respect teachers. He helps them understand that doing well in middle school will impact their success in high school and beyond. He is a great role model for our students.

Adult Volunteer – Ronnie Gray

Ronnie answered the call for help when McIntosh lost their media aide. Since 2005 he has devoted many hours to the school book fair, processing new library books and texts, and shelving materials. In addition, he has been cleaning and clearing of old materials from the library collection, arranging displays, delivering materials to classrooms, checking out and returning library materials. He does it all…inventory of the magazines, assisting students with textbooks and library books, rearranging materials and processing equipment. Ronnie retired from FPL in 2005 after 37 years of service. He is a father of two, grandfather of five, and uncle of many nieces and nephews. He is a support in all their lives and now has become a huge support to us. With his continual support, we are able to fully utilize the vast resources available.

Senior Volunteer – William Jenkins

Mr. Jenkins is a decorated Vietnam Veteran who was shot down by enemy fire while serving as a medic. He first got involved at McIntosh after attending our Veteran’s Day Program. Despite his injuries, he comes in everyday with a smile and encouraging words for the students. He helps the struggling readers with phonics, comprehension, and fluency activities. The students respond to him and love to hear his stories. Mr. Jenkins is a tireless positive, and constructive presence in the classroom. He sees the big picture. He assists each student, modeling an effective approach to learning and to live by. He is so dedicated that he returned within a few weeks of major back surgery to continue his help with our struggling readers. When thanking him for his dedication, he quickly “turns the tables” and insists that our students are motivating him. Our school is a better place because of Mr. Jenkins.

Innovative Project – A Salute to our Veterans

Lead by Social Studies Teacher, Jill Rothenburg, our school has an annual celebration to honor American Veterans and current service personnel. This program is unique in many ways; it promotes a total commitment of cooperation between two schools - Sarasota Military Academy and McIntosh Middle School. This combined effort involves many people at both schools working very hard to produce a wonderful and meaningful assembly for the sole purpose of honoring the veterans in our community. Our entire staff and student body participates in this program. All students are invited to make posters celebrating our Veterans. The winning posters are displayed at the event. Additionally, students are encouraged to write speeches and one speech from each grade level is read during the program. The school band plays and chorus participate by providing patriotic music. Starting weeks prior to Veteran’s day, various topics are addressed during our morning announcements. These topics include everything from “what is a veteran, to flag etiquette, to how to show patriotism. It is a meaningful way to promote patriotism and enrich the lives of our middle school children. We must not loose sight and must continue to educate the mind and the heart about the moral character of our American Spirit.

We are proud to acknowledge the Annual Veteran’s Day Celebration held at MMS each year. Through the hard work of many people at both McIntosh and Sarasota Military Academy, we have a program that includes Veteran’s from each branch of our armed forces. It is an opportunity for our students to learn about the sacrifices the veterans have made to our protect our freedom and promote patriotism. We are most grateful to the many people who make this event bigger and better each year.

Business Partner – Rotary Club of Sarasota Sunrise

For the past five years, the Sunrise Rotary Club has purchased school supplies that they donate to McIntosh for our needy students. These donations have helped so many of our students to have the necessary “tools” to be successful. The club also passes a “piggy bank” at their meetings and monetary donations are collected and given to McIntosh. These funds are, again, used to help families in emergency situations. We have been able to purchase clothing and shoes, provide household needs, as well as pay for fieldtrips. Additionally, we are able to choose families to participate in “The Tree of Joy Project”. The families have an opportunity to enjoy a night of shopping. Each student gets to purchase necessity items and a gift from Santa. Their generosity of time, money and support are greatly appreciated by the students, families and staff of McIntosh. They have made a difference in the lives of many of our students over the years. We could never begin to thank them properly for all the support and generosity.
