Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) Program
The Voluntary PreKindergarten (VPK) legislation was signed into law by former Governor Jeb Bush on January 2, 2005. This law created a program to prepare every Florida four-year-old for kindergarten and build a strong foundation for their continued educational success. The VPK program is FREE for eligible children, regardless of family income. Parents will need to provide verification of your child's age (must be 4 years of age on or before September 1 of the program year), immunizations, and Florida residence.
Parents must choose either a School-Year Program or a Summer Program, as children are not permitted to attend both sessions.
The 2015/2016 School-Year Program, (begins in August 2015 and must be completed by June 2016) offers 540 instructional hours at private preschools. Children born between September 2, 2010 and September 1, 2011 are eligible to attend a School-Year Program. The 2015/2016 Summer Program will be offering 300 instructional hours at three (depending on enrollment) Sarasota County public elementary schools: Lamarque, Gulf Gate, and Gocio. Children born between September 2, 2010 and September 1, 2011 are eligible to attend the Summer Program. Parents are responsible for transportation.
The summer VPK program will run Wednesday, May 6, 2015 - Wednesday, July 22, 2015, Monday - Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Schools will be closed the week of July 4 (June 29 - July 2) and on Memorial Day.
