SMILE! Sarasota County Schools has partnered with the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County to provide a free dental program for second-grade students at selected schools.

SARASOTA, Dec. 13, 2016 - Sarasota County Schools has partnered with the Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County to provide a free dental sealant program for second-grade students at selected schools. The goal is to stop tooth decay. A registered dental hygienist will visit schools and teach participating children how to properly brush their teeth, provide a fluoride treatment, and place dental sealants on the chewing surfaces of their back teeth.

The sealant is a safe and painless thin plastic coating to keep food and germs off the chewing surfaces of teeth. Sealants can protect against 85 percent of cavities on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend dental sealants as an important and effective way to promote good dental health. Healthy teeth and gums can lead to better overall health. (Please note that health officials say this program is not meant to replace a complete dental check-up by a licensed dentist.)

Second-grade students at the following schools are eligible for the free dental sealants. Parents at participating schools will be reminded when the program is scheduled at their child’s school but can also check the scheduled dates below.
