ATTENDANCE
The Sarasota County School Board is committed to increasing the time
that a student spends in the classroom in a positive learning situation.
All attendance procedures are
carefully scrutinized. Absences will be marked as unexcused until we
receive communication from home.
Please call
school (361-6230) when your child is absent.
Students must bring a note from
home that explains the reason for the absence. Upon returning to school,
students have three days to bring in a note excusing the absence. Only
then will the absence be changed from unexcused to excused. According to
Sarasota School District policy, five unexcused absences (per quarter)
result in failure of work habits.
Please note that five days of
tardiness will also result in failure of work habits.
A Perfect Attendance will be awarded quarterly and at the end of the
year. Excessive tardiness will prevent a student from receiving a
Perfect Attendance Award.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
The Sarasota School Board has adopted the following policy with
regards to family vacations occurring during the school year:
For those who will be on a family trip for two school days or less,
prearranged absences may or may not be excused at the discretion of the
school.
For those who will be on a family trip for three to ten days,
prearranged absences may be clarified as Independent Study. The
teacher may require that the students complete assignments, make up
tests, and/or develop a special project based on the nature of the
activity. The Independent Study must be prearranged and the Independent
Study Form completed and signed by the parent, student, and principal.
The absence will then be coded as "I".
For those who will be on a family trip for eleven or more school
days, the principal may withdraw the student from school. Upon return,
the parent will need to register the students again.
Please be aware that the school system
intends to prosecute parents who are not in compliance with the
compulsory school age laws (ages 6-16). If parents are the cause of
their child being out of school with excessive unexcused absences,
action will be taken.

SCHOOL SCHEDULE
Morning
Bell----------8:20 a.m.
Classes Begin---------8:30 a.m.
Dismissal---------------3:15 p.m.
Students arriving after the 8:30 bell will be marked tardy by their
teachers. PARENTS MUST SIGN LATE STUDENTS IN AT THE OFFICE. Parents
wishing to take a child out of school before the end of the day must
come to the office to sign the child out. The office staff will call for
the child from the classroom at that time. When the student has a doctor
or dentist appointment, please send a note to the teacher
beforehand.
Children will not be released with a telephone request. A child who
must leave school during the school day must be released to the parent/guardian or to someone that the parent or guardian has authorized in
writing as a designee.
If students are not picked up at the end of the school day by office
closing time and after all attempts have been made to contact
parents/guardians, Child & Family Services will be contacted to take
over the supervision of the child.

TRANSPORTATION
Cars--There are separate vehicular loops for cars and
school buses. The entrance ways are marked. To ensure the safety of our
students, do not enter the bus loading driveway. If it is necessary to
leave your car for any reason, you are required to park in the parking
lots. Parents and other drivers need to
exercise considerable caution when driving in the vicinity of the
school.
Buses--Students must observe all safety regulations at
the bus stop and while riding the bus. Further information will be given
to students by the bus driver. Students are not permitted to ride a
school bus other than their own for the purpose of a social visit to a
friend's home. Other transportation arrangements must be made between
parents in advance.
Bikes--Bicycle
helmets are required by law, and students are not permitted to ride
their bicycles to school without a helmet.
Bicycles racks are located in
cages at the front and the back of the school. Under no circumstances
should bicycles be left in the bicycles racks overnight.
Rainy Day Pick-Up--If your child rides a bike or walks
to school, it is important for him/her to know in advance what to do if
it is raining at dismissal time. If you will be picking up your child by
car, please make a standing rainy day arrangement about where and when
you will arrive. This will help avoid many of the delays caused by the
overuse of telephones on rainy days.

change with School Board action.
Breakfast is available from 7:45 to 8:20 a.m. The cost is $0.75 per

Lunchroom rules have been established to provide a more pleasant and
healthy atmosphere for our students during lunchtime.

HOMEWORK
The Brentwood School faculty recognizes the value of purposeful
homework. All children will be assigned homework on a regular basis.
Each
teacher determines his or her own homework assignments and frequency, and
he or she will send
home guidelines at the beginning of the school year. Parents are asked
to cooperate with the school by providing a quiet place and time at home
for the completion of homework assignments.
