Venice Middle School staff and students are continuing their focus on literacy. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation of Venice has renewed our Strategic Grant Making in Education grant for this school year, and we continue to be a member of FLaRE, Florida Literacy and Reading Excellence, a literacy center at the University of Central Florida, which serves the entire state. As a result, many exciting activities are occurring at VMS.

Our former “Literacy Council” is now called the Reading Leadership Team (RLT), and we have more than 20 active members from all disciplines, school administration, and Media Specialist. We also have guest members from around the community.  The council meets on the second Monday of the month after school, except during our FCAT testing window.  We meet to discuss and share ideas on how to impact student achievement through literacy-based instruction in all content areas.

If you are interested in becoming a literacy volunteer, we would love to have you help us!  If you have questions, feel free to contact either Kristin Mikarts or Ruth Shaulis at 486-2100.
