Test Day

What to expect when you arrive on test day

SAT Reasoning Test

  • Bring two No. 2 pencils and a good eraser — a pencil is required for the multiple choice questions and the essay.
  • Plan to arrive at the test center by 7:45 a.m.
  • Testing starts at about 8:00 a.m. and ends at about 12:30 p.m.
  • You will get a short break at the end of each hour of testing time. You can eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you during these breaks.
  • You must work within each section of the SAT only for the time allotted. You are not permitted to go back to a section once that section has ended. Nor are you permitted to start the next section if you finish a section early.
  • The testing supervisor will guide you through the testing process and provide all the necessary instructions.

SAT Subject Tests

  • Plan to arrive at the test center by 7:45 a.m.
  • Testing starts at about 8:00 a.m. and ends at about noon if you take the maximum of three subject tests.
  • Each Subject Test is about one hour long.
  • If you are only taking one or two Subject Tests, you may leave the test center after your final test is finished.
  • You may work on only one test during each testing hour. You will get a short break at the end of each hour of testing time.
  • You can take up to three Subject Tests on one test date.
  • You can change your mind on test day about which Subject Test you want to take. You may substitute a Subject Test (other than a listening test), or add Subject Tests (other than a listening test) on test day.
  • The testing supervisor will guide you through the testing process and provide all the necessary instructions.

Standby Testing

  • If you miss the late registration deadline, there's still a chance you can sometimes take the SAT as a standby. Test centers accept standbys on a first-come, first-serve basis only if they have enough space, testing materials, and staff-so there is no guarantee that you'll be admitted to the test. Read more about Standby Testing.

    If You're Absent

  • If you are absent on test day and you wish to test on another date, call Customer Service at (609) 771-7600 (TTY: 609 882-4118). If you do not wish to test on another date, your test and registration fees (including fees for services such as telephone re-registration) are nonrefundable. No reports will be sent.
  • The fee is $20 to change your test, test date, or test center.
  • When you call, be ready to tell the customer service representative your registration number and test date, your social security number, and the credit card number and expiration date. If you do not want to change your test date and would like to request a refund for any additional score reports, Question-and-Answer Service, and Student Answer Service, call Customer Service at (609) 771-7600.

    What to Bring to the Test Center

  • Two No. 2 pencils and a good eraser -- a pencil is required for the multiple choice questions and the essay.
  • An acceptable calculator (for SAT and Subject Tests in Mathematics)
  • Snacks: Although for security reasons, neither food nor drinks can be opened or consumed in the test room, you are encouraged to bring snacks in a book bag on test day. These snacks are easily stowed under desks or chairs in the test room and can be consumed outside of the test room during breaks.

For SAT Language with Listening Subject Tests

  • If you are taking Language with Listening Subject Test, you must also bring an acceptable CD player with earphones.

What Not to Bring to the Test Center

  • A watch with an audible alarm
  • Scratch paper
  • Notes, books, dictionaries
  • Compass, protractor, ruler, or any other aid
  • Highlighters or colored pens or pencils
  • Portable listening or recording device (with or without earphones) or photographic equipment (Note: Acceptable CD players with earphones are required for the listening tests.)
  • Cellular telephone or pager

ACT Test Day Procedures

  • Report to your assigned test center by the time (usually 8:00 a.m.) listed on your admission ticket. (You will not need to have an admission ticket if you are trying to test standby.) Be sure you know how to get to your test center. You will not be admitted if you are late.
  • Have acceptable identification with you. You will not be admitted without it.
  • A test center supervisor will check your ID and admission ticket, admit you to the test center, direct you to a seat, and provide test materials.
  • Testing normally begins only after all examinees present at 8:00 a.m. are checked in.
  • Do not engage in any prohibited behaviors at the test center or you will be dismissed and your test will not be scored.
  • During the test, test supervisors will check your calculator to ensure that:
  • it is a permitted type;
  • you use it only during the Mathematics Test;
  • you use your backup calculator only if your primary calculator fails;
  • you do not share your calculator; and
  • you do not store test materials in your calculator's memory.
  • If your calculator has characters one inch high or larger, or a raised display, testing staff may seat you where no other test taker can see your calculator.
  • A break is scheduled after the first two tests. (If you take the Writing Test, you will be allowed another brief break after the last multiple-choice test to relax and sharpen your pencils.) Students testing with standard time are normally dismissed at about 12:15 p.m. (or 1:00 p.m. if taking the ACT Plus Writing).
  • If you do not complete the test for any reason, tell your test supervisor or proctor—before you leave the test center—whether or not your test should be scored.

Standby Testing

SAT Standby Information / ACT Standby Information

If you miss the late registration deadline, there's still a chance you can sometimes take the SAT or ACT as a standby. Test centers accept standbys on a first-come, first-serve basis only if they have enough space, testing materials, and staff—so there is no guarantee that you'll be admitted to the test.

Instructions

To be considered for standby testing, please be present at the test center on test day before 7:45 a.m. You will also be charged a standby fee in addition to the regular fee for the test or tests you wish to take.

Bring a completed Registration Form (available in the Guidance Office), sealed in its envelope, along with payment by check, money order, or credit card.

Please do not call testing centers or test supervisors for information about standby testing, since they do not know until test day if there will be room to admit you as a standby tester.
