Hatched Shark Egg

The egg case shown below contained a developing Banded Cat Shark or also called a Brown Banded Bamboo Shark. The scientific name is Chiloscyllium punctatum. This egg case contained 1 developing shark embryo and its yolk sac. It took 11 weeks for it to hatch. In captivity it has been found to take up to 4 months. The interesting thing about this shark is the juvenile is banded in color and turns into a sleek gray color with no bands as an adult, very similar to a Dogfish shark. Mrs D. Tweedie's Honors Marine Science class raised funds to purchase the egg cases, a new aquariums and equipment by selling candy.
