What is the difference between expository and narrative?

Purpose:  To Tell

Features

·       Recounts or retells using who, what when, where, and why

·       Has supporting details using personal examples

·       Explains step by step

·       Describes a procedure

 

Features

·       Gives details of characters, plot, setting, and events

·       Tells who, what, when, and where

·       Has a story line

·       Show a sequence of events

·       States a problem, attempts to solve the problem, and a solution

Examples

·       Explain what happened in a news event

·       Record the event in a diary

·       Explain the procedure

·       Retell a story

·       Write a manual, procedure, recipe, or news flash

Examples

·       Tell about an event, place, person, or thing

·       Write a story for the school newspaper
