TATUM RIDGE SCHOOL PRINCIPLES 1. Be where you are supposed to be and on time. 2. Be prepared and on task in class. 3. Respect the rights, responsibilities and property of others. 4. Strive for excellence. Do your best. 5. Ask for what you need. Principles are general guidelines for behavior. They are non-specific and open to different interpretations. They are the reasons behind the rules and cannot directly be enforced. They help motivate people to follow rules. Principles do not change. When a behavior is tied to a higher value it helps students get the idea that we do the right thing because it’s and not just to avoid punishment. During an initial discussion of classroom rules, teachers may find it helpful to speak of the “golden rule”—treating others as we would like to be treated ourselves—as an all encompassing principle of behavior. Rules govern specific behaviors. They are concrete and measure observable actions. Rules change according to necessity, circumstances and attitudes. Teachers at Tatum Ridge will develop their own classroom rules based on the school-wide principles. It is recommended that teachers involve students in the process of writing the classroom rules at whatever level is deemed appropriate. A packet of suggestions and activities for writing rules with a class and demonstrating work habits is available for teachers.
