Mr. Gangi, a first grade teacher, is offering guitar lessons to students at Phillippi Shores on Thursday afternooons. Over 25 children have enrolled in the six week program.

(Dance)

Students from the IB programme at Riverview and students from the IB programme at Phillippi came together to celebrate the first Annual IB Arts Day. Students from Riverview created a contemporary shadow puppet performance which was shared with Phillippi students. Also, the Riverview students presented a Visual Arts show as well as a Music Presentation. Phillippi students were encouraged to create a dance under the direction of the Riverview dance students.

Student Action Committee--Peace Pole

The Student Action Committee at Phillippi Shores is creating a Peace Pole which will be placed in the school's courtyard in May. The Peace Pole tradition began over 50 years ago. There are over 200,000 peace poles in the world. Phillippi's Peace Pole will display the words " May Peace Prevail on Earth" in English, Hebrew, Chinese, Spanish, French and German.

Kindergarten IB Unit---What's the Matter?

The kindergarten students at Phillippi Shores meet every Thursday morning in the cafeteria from 9:30-10:30 to with different forms of matter. They will rotate through six hands-on activities during the six weeks of the unit. Matter is the final unit that the kindergarten will study this year.

Kiva Car Wash

The fourth grade students at Phillippi Shores have taken on Kiva as a very special project this year to help those in need. Kiva lets you send to a specific entrepreneur in a developing world empowering them to lift themselves out of poverty. All proceeds from the car wash will be sent to the Kiva program.

Jogathon 2008


Phillippi Shores had their annual jogathon on Friday, February 29th. The students enjoyed a beautiful cool morning to walk, jog or run around the track. There were many volunteers to assist with the tags and water stations. The PTA sponsored event was a huge success.

Valentine's Volunteer Breakfast

Phillippi Shores IB World School honored all the wonderful volunteers at a Valentine breakfast in the Swift Media Center. The students and staff at Phillippi are so grateful to the many volunteers who helped to make our school a beautiful place to learn.

Catherine H. Swift Media Center Ceremony

Mr. Jon Swift donated $44,000 to Phillippi Shores IB World School. The school will receive this donation in payments of $11,000 a year over four year. As the contractor who built our new facility, Mr. Swift feels a strong bond with Phillippi. Also, his children as well as his grandchildren have either attended or still attend Phillippi. His mother, Mrs. Catherine H. Swift, was an educator and leader in the community. As a special honor to her, Mr. Jon Swift asked if the media center at Phillippi could be named in her honor. A special presentation for this event was held in the Phillippi cafeteria and media center on Tuesday, January 22nd.

Book Donation

Mr. Phillip L. Brooks is a retired Hall of Frame football coach and educator. He is also the the founder and director on Winning, Inc., a literacy program for innercity youths. Mr. Brooks wrote the book, Forward Pass: The Play That Saved the Day based on the true story of the forward pass legalization in 1906. Mr. Brooks' granddaughters Jennifer and Jacqulyn Dixon attend school at Phillippi Shores and asked their grandfather to come to school and dedicate the book to the Phillippi Media Center.

Riverview Volunteers

Riverview Volunteers Each Thursday a group of Riverview High School students, under the direction of Mr. Greg Truitt, come to Phillippi Shores to tutor students in grade one in both reading and math. The Riverview group was selected as one of five volunteer activities to be honored by the district.

Student-Led Conferences - Parents


The fifth graders held their very first student-led conferences with parents this past week. The students were well prepared. They explained their goals to their parents, shared their favorite pieces of work and discussed areas where parents could help them with schoolwork. Parents and students each filled out a separate reflection form about the process. Comments from both parents and students were quite favorable.

Student-Led Conference

One of the important parts of the International Baccalaureate program is that students take responsibility for a student-led conference with their parents. The students in grade five will conduct their conferences with their parents in November. The pictures show the fifth grade students practicing for this first time event. All other grades will hold their student-led conferences in May.

Science Fair

The media center was filled with wonderful science fair projects that were on display for all parents, students and visitors to see. Several semi-finalist were announced. The pictures of the finalist projects will be shown after the judging in January.

Thanksgiving

It was a wonderful Thanksgiving feast at Phillippi Shores as lots of parents and grandparents joined students for the annual Thanksgiving celebration on November 15th.

Veterans' Day

Veterans' Day was celebrated in the cafeteria on Monday, November 12th. Mrs. Theriot, our music teacher opened the assembly with our Phillippi School song. The colors were posted by Boy Scout Troop 50. Students from the of fourth and fifth grade read a letter from the President and spoke about the history of Veterans Day. They also performed a Veterans Day skit. There were several veterans present as well as two guest speakers. County Commissioner Paul Mercier and veteran Al Clark, Outstanding Volunteer for the our school, spoke words of inspiration. Dr. Albright, a school volunteer closed the program with taps.

Character Parade

Every year the Kindergarten classes at Phillippi Shores IB World School dress up as their favorite storybook character and parade around the school and courtyard for all the other students at Phillippi. Even some of the office staff joined in on the fun.

Pumpkin Carving

The PTA of Phillippi Shores IB World School sponsored a funfilled activity night for parents and children with a pumpkin carving night. Students work with their parents to make each of their pumpkins unique.

Hat Day

During "Drug Awareness" week students were allowed to wear hats to school in support of a drug free nation. They showed off their creativity with a variety of fun hats.

Ronald McDonald at Phillippi Shores

Ronald McDonald visited the students in grade two in the media center at Phillippi Shores. Ronald McDonald had a very important message to give all the students. He was promoting reading as a life long learner process in celebration of National Book Week.

Take Your Dad to School


Phillippi Shores' dads and families showed up in great numbers during "bring you dad to school week". The lunchroom was very busy as children ate lunch with their dads. We also had lots of families enjoying lunch together as well. It was wonderful to see so many dads, granddads and families here during the week.
