VISION
Phillippi Shores Elementary School has a universal vision of continually improving the quality of learning opportunities for students. Students develop academically, emotionally, and physically to their highest potential in an environment that is stimulating, caring, and supportive. Constructed on a foundation of trust, respect, and high expectations, our students become knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, and well-balanced. The collaborative effort of parents and staff enables each student to strive for excellence, to build a positive self-image, and to develop a love for learning.
SCHOOL MISSION
The family of Phillippi Shores Elementary School strives to grow inward, outward and upward as we inquire, think, communicate, and take creative risks.

Reader |

The
Accelerated Reader Program really buzzes at Phillippi Shores.
Students enjoy the wonderful world of reading and are rewarded
by earning points based on the level of success and effort put
forth by the student. Students are always taking AR tests either
in the media center, the computer lab or their classrooms. They
are excited about earning AR points. Once points are accumulated,
students can spend these points at the AR store. The STAR testing
computerized program helps students to determine which books
are best suited for their reading level.

Phillippi
Shores students supplement their classroom instruction in reading
and mathematics by using an Instructional Learning System (ILS).
This ILS is best known by all the students as the “SuccessMaker” program.
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will attend the SuccessMaker
this school year. Students spend thirty minutes in the SuccessMaker
labs two to five times a week depending on grade level. The computerized
exercises are individualized to ensure that students work at a
level that keeps them challenged yet not frustrated. Student progress
is recorded in a management system that is networked and accessible
to teachers for monitoring students’ improvement in reading
and math. |
| Strings & Chorus
Program |
|
The STRINGS
PROGRAM at Phillippi is open to all 4th or 5th graders.
We will learn the basics of reading music, violin technique,
and performance practice. We meet on Tuesday afternoons during
school, from 2pm-230pm. You may choose to rent a violin from
the school for $55 for the school year. You must be approved
for participation by your classroom teacher.
The CHORUS PROGRAM at Phillippi is also open
to all 4th and 5th graders. In chorus we get the opportunity to
learn proper rehearsal technique, performance practice, and a few
dance steps mixed in for fun. We will perform in public for many
different audiences this year, including "Celebrate Sarasota" at
the Van Wezel in October. Students from this ensemble will also
be permitted to audition for the Florida All-State Elementary Chorus
(conference to be held in Tampa in January). We rehearse on Wednesday
afternoons during school, from 2pm- 230pm. You must be approved
for participation by your classroom teacher. |
| School Counseling |
|
What's
Happening in the Phillippi Shores Counseling Program?
Phillippi Shores believes in developing the "whole" child.
Our counseling program provides students, parents, and teachers
an opportunity to problem solve, validate feelings, explore
options, and evaluate progress. The program includes individual,
small group, and classroom guidance for personal/social, educational,
and career development. Parents, teachers, students and community
organizations must work together to provide for all developmental
areas. Thank you for your support!

| Gifted
Program |
|
Phillippi
Shores provides Quest for Excellence and Enrichment Classes
(QE2) for grades two through five. Students qualifying for
these classes are those identified as eligible for gifted
services. Phillippi is one of the few schools in the Sarasota
County
offering full-time gifted services in a self-contained classroom
environment. |
| D.A.R.E. |
|
(Drug
Abuse Resistance Education) is taught for 10 weeks
to all 5th graders. A partnership with the Sarasota County
Sheriff's Department allows a deputy to instruct the students
on the perils of alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. Students
learn about the effects of these dangerous substances, and
how peer
pressure and media hype tempt them to fall victim to these
dangerous habits. Most importantly, they learn how to "Just
Say NO"!
Our DARE officer, Det. Wood, also serves as Phillippi's School
Resource Officer. She teaches various safety lessons to the k-4
grades such as Stranger Danger, Bike Safety, How not to be bullied,
and gang resistance. Det Wood also helps us to maintain a safe
school environment by assisting with traffic control and other
law enforcement duties. |
| Odyssey
of the Mind |
|
The
fourth and fifth grade gifted class partakes in the Odyssey
of the Mind. It is a creative problem-solving program.
It provides the students with the opportunity to learn creative
problem solving,
teamwork, brainstorming, self-reliance, and respect for individual
strength. Teams of five to seven students develop solutions to
Long Term Problems over several months, while practicing for a
Spontaneous Problem. In the Long Term Problem teams develop a theatrical
and engineering solution to a specific situational problem over
several months. For the Spontaneous Problems, where the students
develop quick problem solving skill for verbal or hand on activities. |
| Science
Lab |
|
Students, grades K-5 experience developmentally appropriate daily
science activities using a complete hands-on Spectrum System
format. The program, aligned with National Science Education
Standards and Sarasota County Science Curriculum, facilitates
inquiry-based science learning with links to math, language and
technology. All students work in four-person teams with assigned
roles, thus instilling cooperation and responsibility at early
ages! Application assessments show that all students are engaged
and learning with this empowering, student-centered program!

| Media
Center |
|
The Media
Center is a busy place. There is a never-ending line of individual
students checking books in and out, weekly scheduled
class visits for book exchange and research, and a continuous line
at the Accelerated Reader computer. All students are encouraged
to visit the Media Center at least once every week and are allowed
to have 2 items checked out that are to be returned or renewed
within 2 weeks. We work on being responsible library users by keeping
books clean, dry, damage free, stored in safe places, and by using
proper bookmarks. These good habits last a lifetime. We are fortunate
this year to be included in a School Board grant program to build
and update our non-fiction collection. The way
to become a better reader is to READ... READ...READ... READ...
READ! |
| PSNN |
|
 |
Phillippi Shores fifth graders help to get the news out every morning on PSNN (Phillippi Shores News Now). Students learn to use their communication, technology and reading skills in their position as anchor, weather reporter, special events reporter or technician. The news show runs from 8:30-8:45 a.m. every morning. Students in classrooms are challenged with a question everyday and a new word per week. |
