Questions About Next Generation Learning

What are the main initiatives of NeXt Generation Learning?
The first is teaching this generation of technology-savvy learners in ways that engage them in their learning process. The purpose to is move all students up; placing every child on a path to success. Second is closing the achievement gap with the lowest performing students and infusing rigor and relationships into all that we do. The third initiative is to help all children prepare for the job market they will face in this digital age. This includes career/technical exploration, courses that are relevant to the world of work and education plans for each student that capitalize on their interests and talents. Finally, Next Generation Learning involves providing the finest, most respectful service to all fellow workers and customers.

Where do the basic subjects fit into NeXt Generation Learning?
As we implement the Next Generation Learning plan, we still must meet rigorous state standards in reading, writing, math and science. We must provide all the basic subjects as a foundation for success, then build on that with technical training for a future workforce filled with competitive high-skilled jobs. The way the subjects are taught is what must change. Students today are wired differently, so their learning must be more hands-on and active, instead of passive (such as lectures).

What are the challenges the district is facing?
This school district has experienced many successes, but still face many challenges ahead, such as: 1) Closing the achievement gap with low socio-economic and minority students; 2) Improving graduation and dropout rates; 3) Enhancing career and technical education programs so students graduate with skills necessary for the 21st Century workforce. 4) Providing adequate resources for a growing and diverse student population in facilities, technology and equipment, competitive teacher salaries, and quality programs. 5) Keeping students and staff safe and secure.
