Does The Media Affect a Child?

By the time a child graduates from elementary school, she will have witnessed 8,000 murders on television.  A profane word is used once every six minutes on network television and once every two minutes on premium cable shows. Sex, violence and profanity are rampant in entertainment. And they have a huge effect on our children. They desensitize children to real life violence. They increase aggressive behavior by condoning violence or inappropriate behavior.

Television and its Effects

Three mechanisms have been identified that provide a link between violent television programming and aggressive behavior
in children.
-Lack of consequences
-Violence is rewarded
-Desensitization

What about drugs?

Hollywood executives like to claim that their products don't influence behavior, but thirty years of research proves otherwise. A teen's decision to consume alcohol, use drugs, smoke cigarettes or become sexually active can largely be predicted by the movies and television shows they watch, the video games they play, or the music then listen to. It's long past time for Hollywood to take responsibility for the messages they communicate to impressionable children.

What Can You Do?

Individually there is little one person can do to change entertainment. But you can start by making a choice to become educated and protect your children then speaking up on behalf of our community to demand entertainment that is family friendly. If we join together, there is nothing that we cannot do.

St. Judes Hospital
April 9th, 2008 began the kick off for our 1st annual Math-A-Thon.  This event raised money for St. Jude Children's Hospital.  Each student received a booklet to start collecting pledges if they chose to participate.  Students had one week to complete as many math problems in their Fun Books as possible. Students then collected donations based on how many problems they finished.  All proceeds were sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
St. Jude Children’s Hospital helps children who have cancer and other life threatening diseases.  Thank you for your support that made our 1st Math-A-Thon a success!

North Port PD's K9 Unit will be on site
The North Port Police Department drug sniffing dogs will be visiting HCMS throughout the 2008-2009 school year on a regular basis as we ensure a safe and orderly environment for our students and staff. These highly trained canines will randomly visit classrooms and common areas to help promote drug awareness and the prevention of illegal drugs on campus.
